ENGLISH FOR SPEAKERS
OF
OTHER LANGUAGES (ESOL)

Project Read provides Oneida area adults 18 years of age and older whose first language is not English free one-on-one tutoring on a flexible schedule and offers child care and transportation for the tutorials as well as family and job-counseling support. The goals of Project Read’s ESOL program are to improve the learners’ use of the English language and to connect them to community resources that will help them succeed.

Project Read has attracted to its ESOL program learners from a variety of cultural backgrounds. All seek to improve their English language skills in order to function more successfully in American society. Yet they have a variety of individual goals, including getting a good job, becoming more effective at their work, helping their children to learn English and do well in school or just learning to fill out forms.

In Project Read, the ESOL tutor’s goal from the beginning is to get the adult learner actively involved in the education process and collaborate in both teaching and learning. A learner starts out by telling the tutor a story of a personal experience, and the tutor

'I saw that I needed English to teach my children so they would do better when they go to school. I came to the library to get books so I could teach myself English. I saw Judy Donnelly there, and she told me about the Project Read program.'

derives from this story lessons in spelling, phonics, vocabulary and grammar. Learners themselves set the goals for each tutorial session.

Most tutorial sessions, whether day or evening, are held in the Oneida Public Library’s Literacy Classroom during regular library hours. But tutors and learners can arrange to meet at other public libraries in the area.
