WELCOME

Oneida ARTS - a unique approach to language, literacy and learning - is an Even Start Family Literacy partnership between the Oneida Public Library and the Madison-Oneida BOCES. A federally funded program, Oneida ARTS is a free, innovative family literacy program that helps parents further their education as well as increase their involvement with the language development of their children, especially those from birth through seven years of age.

Following federal income and literacy guidelines, Oneida ARTS is designed for parents with children seven years old and younger who wish
* To pursue their education, leading to a high-school diploma or GED,
*To improve their job skills,
*To learn effective parenting skills,
*To improve their literacy skills,
*To create a positive and rewarding learning environment at home, and
*To help their children learn the language skills that will make them a success in school.

Oneida ART services are provided both in the home and in the Oneida Public Library. Parent/ child educators visit enrolled families once a week to create intergenerational and interactive language arts activities, coordinate adult education plans and help families structure a learning environment. Program and Oneida Library staff, meanwhile, have planned a variety of parenting workshops for adults and a host of family reading and language arts programs.

Eligible families must live in the Oneida City School District, have at least one child seven years of age or younger and meet income and literacy levels as defined by the federal government. Interested parents can enroll either at the Oneida Public Library or at the Madison-Oneida BOCES.

MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the Oneida ARTS Even Start Family Literacy Program is to provide high-quality instructional services to participants that are of sufficient intensity in terms of hours and of sufficient duration to make sustainable, positive changes in the life of each family.
