Children in the south area of the Town of Cazenovia need a safe, modern playground-park.  Updating, upgrading and expanding the present playground installation behind the New Woodstock Free Library would be an excellent strategy to accomplish this.  There is considerable support for this concept among residents, service organizations and community leaders.  Sufficient land is already owned and used by the town for a playground.

This is the current playground

Potential Benefits

The following benefits may be realized:

·         Improvement in appearance, safety and usefulness of the present facility

·         Increase in use by all ages

·         Healthy play for area youth

·         Increase in visits to library and other local organizations

·         Ability for parents to enjoy library, softball field and other facilities while their children play

·         Cooperation with Town Recreation Department, the public library and other agencies will benefit all

Background

The existing playground was built in 1989 by a group of volunteers, is named the “New Woodstock Ruritan Community Playground,” and is “Dedicated in memory of Sheila McNamara by her friends and neighbors.”  The playground was owned by the school district and subsequently sold to the Town of Cazenovia.  The softball field was constructed circa the 1970s.   Both the playground and the softball field are heavily used.  (See statement by Ed Roickle, attached)

Head Start has built a small playground adjacent to the former school building, about 300 yards from the Ruritan Community Playground and softball field. It is used by Head Start students and by residents.

Statement by Ed Roickle. The playground was built in 1989 by a group of volunteers including Roger Cook and his summer employees, Gary Foster, the Palmers, myself, and a lot of other people. Matt Potteiger had a design contest in one of the courses he taught, and that was largely the basis for the construction. Approximately $7,000 was raised from Sheila's family, friends and local people. I probably still have the list somewhere. The property was then owned by the School District. It was sold to the Town several years later for $1. The field predates Sheila and me moving here in 1980, but I recall playing on it against the Blarney Stone team in the early and mid 70's.
