Children’s ART RECEPTION

Library Opens Student Art Exhibit, Honors Volunteers

Syracuse Symphony Orchestra violinist Heather Fais performed for the more than 250 people attending a reception for the library’s volunteers and Cazenovia School District student artists held last week at the New Woodstock Free Library. Heather is the daughter of Marilyn Fais, one of three volunteers retiring after decades of service to the library community. The other volunteer retirees are Beth Beardsley and Barbara Doyle.

Also honored were board members Mary Damon and Kyle Doan, retiring as the longest serving current members of the board. Gary Foster was recognized for his work on the library electrical systems over the past decade, and Mary Ellen Holmes received the Volunteer of the Year award.

Library Director Norm Parry said “Volunteers are the hearts and hands of the library; they make this building of books and bricks a thriving, growing place, thanks to their care and effort. Planting will be placed on the library grounds this spring as a growing recognition of their contributions,” Parry said.

Cazenovia art teacher Mary Damon opened the annual student art exhibit, which will continue through December and January, by praising the students for their skill and creativity. “The works displayed here represent the school district’s commitment to excellence in all areas of education,” Damon said.

Library officials noted that the event was the best-attended program in the library’s history. “Public libraries are among the most important growing institutions in the American experience,” one official said. “This event demonstrates that especially in times of economic stress, libraries serve the needs of their communities. People turn to their libraries for employment information, skills development and entertainment. And with advances in library technologies, the library will continue as the most enduring source for growth and enrichment,” the official said.
