The Friends of the Library are true friends who stand by us even in hard times. They are now holding a membership drive. Membership forms are available at the circulation desk, and as Friends President, Gratia Burleigh, says, " We would appreciate your name being added as a member of the Friends." Consider joining this wonderful group this week.

Just to let you know how wonderful this group really is: at their recent meeting, the Friends voted to purchase a new copier for the library and to furnish the funds needed to complete a new roof for the library. That's REAL friendship!

Barb has returned from her fabulous trip to England and Scotland. Stop by to hear some of her interesting tales of travels in the British Isles. Ask to see her Scottish pin and her trim little tote bag! (She's looking very Scottish, you know.) She sends a huge thank-you to Traci for filling in in her absence and to Kay for helping fill in the gaps as well.

The fall Pre-School Story Hour series has begun. The next session will be at 10:30 on Tuesday, October 8th and the theme will be Pigs. (Maybe Olivia will be there?). On the 15th , the theme will be books and libraries, on the 22nd - Birds and on the 29th -- trees. You can be sure Grandma B has some exciting ideas and stories for all these events. Bring the little ones in for an hour of fun and reading.

In honor of Banned Books Week, the library currently has a display of books that have been challenged, banned in this country in the last century, as recently as last year. Stop in and take a look at books at the core of such censorship controversy. Some of the titles will surprise you.

The library will be closed on Monday, October 14th for Columbus Day. Don't forget and come to find the doors locked.

We have some special books on our list of ones waiting to be adopted, donated or otherwise given to our still strapped library. Consider giving one of these books our patrons can't live without (we'll even let you read it first!): Apprentice, by Tess Gerritsen, Courting Trouble by Lisa Scottoline, American Road:The Story of an Epic Transcontinental Journey at the Dawn of the Motor Age by Pete Davies. Crimson Petal and the White by Michel Faber (supposedly goes where George Eliot's "The Mill on the Floss" ....could not") and From a Buick 8 by Stephen King.

Governor Pataki's office has sent to us a CD on Theodore Roosevelt, one of New York State's most celebrated native sons. The CD includes Roosevelt's gubernatorial papers and the Theodore Roosevelt Cyclopedia, an extensive compendium of quotations and extracts from his speeches and writings.

"You've gotta a friend" in your local library. It is here to provide you with laughter and tears and knowledge and relaxation and many more of life's needs. Stop in today and visit your friend..and maybe become a Friend too (Sign up to be one of the "Friends of the Library.")
