MORRISVILLE LIBRARY NEWS October 3, 2001
by Mary Brown
The foliage outside and the sudden chilly weather prompts
us to begin preparing for the winter ahead. Here at the library,
we are preparing as well by planning indoor events and displaying
great books to keep you busy when the frost hits the pumpkin.
Stop by this week and see the nice 4H exhibit in the program
room in celebration of National 4H Week. It will give you a glimpse
of some of the educational and social activities that so many
Madison County young people enjoy in their 4H groups.
Coming up soon, on Friday, October 19th at 7 p.m. in the program
room, Professor Roxanna Pisiak of SUNY Morrisville will be leading
a discussion of Jostein Gaarder's Sophie's World: A Novel about
the History of Philosophy. Pick up a copy of the book at the
circulation desk and join us for a pleasant evening of "book
talk".
On Tuesday, October 23 at 10:30 a.m. the fall Pre-School Story
Hour series with Grandma B. begins and will continue on October
30, November 6, November 13, November 20 and November 27. Bring
in the little ones for these delightful events.
On Saturday, October 27, Beverly Choltco-Devlin's will present
a Genealogy Workshop from 10:30 a.m. till noon. Sign up at the
circulation desk for a spot at this informative and popular workshop.
Barb informs me that she now has all of the Morrisville Library
News columns for this year posted on the library website. Some
patrons look back at the columns for suggestions of good books
to read. Go to www.Mid-York.org/Morrisville to get column information
and lots of other Morrisville Library and Mid-York Library System
news.
Thanks this week go to Lynde LaFever for the nice iris rhizomes
to add to our perennial gardens. Thank also to Connie Caezza
who adopted the new book, Vineyard Shadows, the latest of Philip
Craig's Martha Vineyard mysteries. In this one, J W Jackson,
a retired Boston cop who has moved to Martha's Vineyard to fish
and raise a family, pursues two Boston hoods who have threatened
and assaulted JW's wife and daughter when they are looking for
the husband of a woman to whom JW was once married. A short time
later, the man the hoods were looking for turns up on JW's doorstep
seeking asylum. JW decides he must find out what is going on
in order to protect his own family and lend a helping hand to
his ex-wife.
Other new books this week include A Theory of Relativity by Jacquelyn
Mitchard, a novel that brings us into the world of the McKennas
who have lost their daughter Georgia in an accident and may now
lose their daughter's only child, Keefer, simply because their
daughter was adopted. Also on the New Books cart is Mark McGwire,
Homerun King by Jeff Savage, a baseball biography for 4-8 year
old readers, and part of the popular Sports Achievers series.
It's time to put away the summer clothes, stack the wood, and
stop by your local library to get a book to enjoy on the chilly
evenings of fall.
