MORRISVILLE LIBRARY NEWS November 17, 2001
by Mary Brown
The library has much to be thankful for this year. Many thanks
to all our volunteers, to all those who adopted books this year,
to those who gave gifts, time and effort to the library, and
to Traci, Barb and company who make our library such a welcoming
place to visit.
In the Thanksgiving mode, don't forget that the library will
be closed on Thanksgiving as well as on Friday and Saturday following
the holiday. On Sunday, the 25th, from 2-4, we will be decorating
for the Friends' Holiday Open House (scheduled for Friday, December
7th) and for the Holiday Silent Auction (starting Monday, November
26th). Anyone is welcome to come and help with this festive decorating
event.
The Silent Auction is about to begin! Auction items are still
coming in, and are looking great. Among the items going up for
bid is a lovely watercolor painting by Ethel Foote Stack, who
was born in Morrisville in 1881 and who was a commercial artist
in New York City for many years. Boyd's Bears fans will want
to bid on Cleo P. Pussytoes who is cutely perched in a darling
Windsor chair. Some beautiful small tied quilts, made by talented
area quilters, will be fetching some nice bids, we expect. A
wooden snowman wreath, snowmen figurines and a beautiful handmade
glass bead necklace and earring set are among the many treasures
waiting for your bids in this event. We are so pleased with the
outstanding quality of items for the auction this year. You will
definitely want to do some of your holiday shopping at this event
that benefits your library. The auction is open to the public.
We would greatly appreciate it if any local business people would
donate a gift or gift certificate for the auction. The library
will give receipts for tax deductions, if needed. Thanks to the
Helping Hands students from Colgate who helped set up the auction
display this past week. Although the bidding does not begin until
the Monday after Thanksgiving, the auction items are out for
preview now in the program room. While you're previewing, you
can sign up for a bidding number, so that, once the auction begins,
you'll be ready to write your number on the bid sheets for the
items you hope to win.
While you're here, check out the Mini Book Sale in the front
hallway; this month's sale highlights paperback books, with great
bargain prices of fifty cents each or three for a dollar. Also,
enjoy our display of Christmas craft books and sign out one to
help you make holiday gifts and decorations, and don't forget
to bring in the little ones for the Story Hour with Grandma B
on Tuesday, the 27th at 10:30 a.m.
Check out our beautiful message board when you come in and see
our volunteer, Bette Slocum's original and gorgeous artwork.
Bette is not only our official message board illustrator, but
also fills in most Wednesday evenings at the circulation desk.
She is so dedicated to the library that, when she became seriously
ill while working at the desk last February, she refused to leave
until someone came to replace her. She also serves as the treasurer
of SEVAC. We are lucky to have such a great volunteer in our
community!
Thanks to John Richmond for filling in the pot holes in our driveway
last week. Now the front roof of the library needs repairs; any
donations for this project would be greatly appreciated. The
Friends paid for a great part of our new flat roof last summer,
but now we are in need again. Help! We are also looking for someone
to adopt Good Harbor the new novel by Anita Diamante, author
of The Red Tent. (Thank heavens for all our adoptive parents
who supplement our book collection since the slashing of our
book budget to $2000 a year has made it very hard to buy many
new books. If you can donate or adopt a book, many readers will
benefit. )
A few new items have been donated to the library this week. Thanks
to the Wednesday Club for Jason Elliot's Unexpected Light: Travels
in Afghanistan, given in memory of Martha Whipple. This book
is an account of Elliot's two visits to Afghanistan, first when
he joined the mujahedin in 1979 and was smuggled into Soviet-occupied
Afghanistan; the second happened nearly ten years later, when
he returned to the still war-torn land. Another gift is Jonathan
Franzen's The Corrections , about the five members of the quirky
Lambert family who get their due, as everybody's lives swirl
out of control. Three new donated videos are "Have Fun Playing
the Hand Drums", "Drumming Made Easy: A Complete Guide
for the Beginner", and "Les Miserables: the Entire
10th Anniversary Performance". Also in is Minnie the Mule
and the Erie Canal by Lettie Petrie, former director of the Camden
Public Library.
Many SUNY Morrisville students have been using our library for
research about the history of Morrisville. We welcome all college
students to borrow items, use our Internet connection, and do
research at our library. All students need to do is fill out
a library card application and bring their college ID with them.
Happy Thanksgiving to all and thanks to all who have helped the
library this year.
