Change is the only thing in life that we can be sure
of, and sure enough, things are changing at the library. Library
manager, Barb Fogg, is moving with her husband, Norm, to Barb's
home state of Maryland, where Norm has taken a position in Rockville
as special investigator with the Food and Drug Administration.
Norm starts work there on February 24th; Barb will remain in
this area for a short time to sell their house.
We are most fortunate to welcome back Traci Schuster, who
is filling in during this time of transition. Sheron Smith, Grant
Jackson, Better Slocum and the Steve Jones family will all be
working to make sure that service to our patrons is not disrupted.
Phyllis Mattingly, President of the Morrisville Public Library
Board of Trustees will be accepting applications for a new Library
Manager (bachelor's degree and appropriate experience required)
or Library Director (master's degree in Library Science required).
Applications may be sent to her, c/o the library at P.O. Box
37, Morrisville, NY 13408. You can email her at phalaro@localnet.com
for more information.
The library is looking for a volunteer to help maintain
the Morrisville Library website, in particular the weekly posting
of the Library News column and the monthly Calendar of Events.
This takes less than an hour a week. If you have Macintosh or
PC computer experience and would like to learn how do this using
Adobe web editing software and a basic file transfer program,
contact Barb at the library as soon as you can, so she can teach
you what to do.
Kay Christman has returned from University Hospital and
will be at Crouse Community Center this week as she recovers
from surgery. A cheery card would brighten her day.
Don't forget that the library's Board of Trustees are holding
a Mid-Winter Break Raffle to benefit the Morrisville Public Library.
The prize is dinner, accommodations, and brunch for two at Charlotte's
Creekside in Oneida and may be enjoyed at the winner's convenience
any time within one year of the date of the drawing. Tickets
are $5. and may be purchased at the Morrisville, Hamilton and
Oneida libraries or from any of the Morrisville Library trustees.
The drawing will be held on Wednesday, February 19, 2003 at
4 p.m. at the Morrisville Library. Ticket holders will not need
to be present to win.
The free sewing class will be on Friday, February 14th
from 1-2 p.m. and continue until projects are completed. There
are still a few spaces left in the class. We have plenty of
sewing machines (or you can bring your own). We are still looking
for donated 2 1/8 yard pieces of cotton or cotton-blend fabric
suitable for making scrub tops. Sign up for the class at the
circulation desk.
The library will be closed on Monday, February 17th for
President's Day.
The next event in the winter series of Pre-School Story
Hour will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 18th. The
series will continue on Tuesday mornings through March 11th.
The next evening in the Adult Book Talk series will be
on March 14th, with a discussion of Richard Russo's Nobody's
Fool . Copies can be signed out at the circulation desk.
New books have been arriving this week. Elmore Leonard's
When the Women Come Out to Dance is a collection of nine crime
stories that feature strong women in trouble. The Year's Best
Science Fiction edited by Dozois Gardner is a big volume of 26
stories that should make sci-fi fans forget all about the cold
of winter. John Grisham's newest, The King of Torts is also
on the New Books cart. It focuses on attorney Clay Carter who
takes on a case of man charged with a random killing and finds
himself in the midst of a conspiracy and enormous case against
a huge pharmaceutical company.
For our 4-8 year old readers, Maira Kalman's Fireboat:
the Heroic Adventures of the John J. Harvey follows the history
of this fireboat from its launching in 1931 through its call
into action on 9/11/01. For our pre-schoolers, Marie-Louise
Gay's Stella, Fairy of the Forest follows Stella, her little
brother, Sam, and their dog on a magical walk through a forest.
Thanks to our generous patron, Moors Myers, for donating
A Mind at a Time by Mel Levine M.D., Shakey by Jimmy McDonough,
Bow's Boy by Richard Babcock, and Why Can't Johnny Tell Right
from Wrong by William Kilpatrick.
One thing doesn't change here on Main Street in Morrisville:
the library is here to serve its patrons. Take advantage of this
treasure.
