The fall calendar is starting to fill in quickly at the library. On Wednesday, October 8th, the Chenango Water Exercise Group will give a presentation and show a short video at 7 p.m. in the program room. If you think aquatic exercise might be just the thing for you, come in and see what this successful group has to offer.

On Monday, October 14th, the library will be closed for Columbus Day, but at 10:30 on Tuesday morning (the 15th), Grandma B. will have a Pre-School Story Hour on the topic of "Books and Libraries". Other story hours in the series will be held on October 22, 29 and November 12.

In the program room, there is a great exhibit of art work by local resident, Andrew McPherson; his oil paintings are for sale to benefit the library. What a good idea for a decoration for your home or as a holiday gift for someone!

Coming up before long is the beginning of the Adult Book Talk series for this season. On Friday, November 1st, Professor Roxanna Pisiak will facilitate a discussion of Susan Vreeland's Girl in Hyacinth Blue. This novel narrates moments in the lives of eight people deeply moved and changed by a beautiful Vermeer painting. Copies are now available for sign-out at the circulation desk. Do something new this fall; take part in the Book Talk series and enjoy sharing ideas about some great books with others who also enjoyed them.

Applications for membership in the Friends of the Library are available at the circulation desk and on the library's website as well. Consider joining this group that supports the library in so many ways (including the new copier and the new roof!). Also pick up a pre-printed postcard urging Governor Pataki to support more state aid for New York State public libraries; just sign it, put on a stamp, and send it out to support your library.

Thanks to some generous donations, we have some new books to report. Unholy Wars by John Cooley analyzes the recent developments resulting from the 1980s alliance between the United States and Islamic nations, focusing on Osama Bin Laden, the emergence of the Taliban, and the violence resulting from Afghani conflicts. Arab Nationalism:Between Islam and the Nation-State by Bassam Tibi gives the history of the Arab Nationalist movement.

Austerlitz by W.G. Sebald is set in various train stations across Europe and chronicles a series of conversations that take place over thirty years between the unnamed narrator and (Austerlitz) whom the narrator first encounters in the main train station in Belgium. The Darwin Awards by Wendy Northcutt are weird and sometimes hilarious stories (not urban legends) about just-plain-stupid folks who are killed (or sometimes just injured) through their own stupidity. This is based on her premise that these fools have done the human race a favor by removing themselves from the gene pool. The Travel Detective by the Today show travel editor, Peter Greenberg gives many entertaining tales as well as insider secrets on how to get the lowest fare, make plane reservations, get the best airplane seat, negotiate the best hotel room deals, and much more. Views from on High by John Freeman gives all kinds of information about fire tower trails in the Adirondacks and Catskills. The Last Real People by Joseph LaPointe tells the stories of several interesting, if unconventional, people who live in the Adirondack region, around Newcomb and Long Lake.

If you can't get to the Adirondacks to enjoy the beautiful fall colors and crisp breezes, sign out one of these books and read about the Adirondacks, or take out any of the wonderful books, videos, CD's magazines and events we have to offer.
