EARLVILLE FREE LIBRARY
COMPUTER & INTERNET USE POLICY

INTRODUCTION

In keeping with our role as a source of information, intellectual development, and enrichment for the community, the Earlville Free Library is pleased to provide access to the Internet's World Wide Web. We think you will find the information resources contained in the Internet both informative and stimulating. The Internet is a relatively unregulated medium on which any person, institution, or group in the world can place information in any format. It is a global entity that does not fall under the governance of any single agency, government, or organization. The Internet offers access to many valuable local, national, and international sources of information. There are few limits or checks on the kind of information that is presented by, and accessible to, Internet users. Information found on the Internet may or may not be accurate, appropriate, factual, timely, or useful. The Library has no filtering software installed and does not have the staff to monitor usage.

ACCEPTABLE USE

Internet access is primarily for research and information sources only. Users agree not to use the facilities and capabilities to conduct any business or solicit any activity that is in violation of the law. Users may not create, download, transmit, print, or otherwise distribute pornographic, obscene, or sexually explicit materials. The Library expressly disclaims any liability or responsibility arising from the access to or use of information or other content obtained through electronic information systems, including the Internet, and encompassing any activities by a user found to be illegal, or any consequences thereof. Patrons who violate policies risk losing their right to access the Internet and other electronic sources via Library equipment. Parents of minor children (16 or under) must assume the responsibility for their children's use of the Internet through the Library's connection. In order to use the Internet, minors must have a signed parental consent form on file at the Library. Minors 5 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

PRIVACY LIMITATIONS

Due to the public location of terminals, patron's privacy when using electronic information resources is not assured. Patrons are advised to presume that use of electronic resources in a public place will not be private or protected from monitoring, misuse, or snooping.

LIMITS

Anyone with a valid library card or with a valid form of I.D. may sign up to use the computer. Signup is mandatory. There is a 30 minute time limit per user. If no one is waiting, additional time slots may be scheduled. Time slots may be reserved in advance at the main desk. A maximum of two people may use a terminal.

PRINTING

A minimal fee will be charged for any printed material, as determined by the Board of Trustees

STAFF INTERNET ASSISTANCE

Assistance to individuals using electronic resources will be limited. It will be the responsibility of users to learn effective and safe use of hardware, software, search techniques, and general computer use.
