REMINGTON MANSION. Armory Hill, Ilion, NY
TheRemington Mansion built in 1870, crowned the brow of Armory Hill and was a village Ilion landmark for a little more than fifty years. It was known not only in the U.S. and Canada, but also in Europe, Egypt, India and the Orient. Buyers came from throughout the globe to purchase the world-renowned Remington Rifle.
It was constructed of pink and grey sandstone brought from an area near Potsdam, NY via Lake Ontario and the Erie Canal.
The large barn at the rear of the house, now known as The Stables and owned by The Little Theatre Club, is made of brick and grey stone. Both buildings were turreted like European castles.
Woodwork in the house was made of hand carved black walnut. The mansion, erected at a time when modern conveniences were not even imagined by most, was fully equipped with bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry. All were supplied with running water pumped from wells to storage tanks in the house attic. Even an elevator to move trunks was incorporated.
Rather than have the house become an eyesore, the family decided to have it razed in 1928. The barn is still in use.
