 OFF THE SHELF
West Winfield Library News - by Ruth Rowe

We were very busy over the summer and are now in the process of evaluating our programs. We have 2 surveys asking for the public preference on the type and time of programs for children and adults. You can stop and fill one out (should take less than a minute) or give us a call. It is important to get this information now as this is the time we start booking our entertainers.

This summer, we were very excited with our theme "Books are a Treasure". You may have seen a few pirates in the library or one of our treasure chest book carts. In one of these books carts, we had hidden a treasure and asked children to make a guess of what was inside. There wasn't a puppy or television in it as some children thought but Ashley Demorest had the correct guess of 100 NEW children's books. These books were received from a grant of the Brownstone Book Fund.

On November 13, we had a decorate your own cupcake program with about 20 participants enjoying stories and cupcakes. The stories came from the books out of our new Brownstone Book Fund books. We also announced the winners of the length

and weight contest. Thomas Fallon and Stephanie Carnegie were our lucky winners. Really, all the children there, that got to be the first person to take out one of these new books were the real winners. It was wonderful to see their excited faces as they found their own personal treasures in those books.

We are getting ready for Christmas with our 5th Annual Cookies by the Pound. There will be a variety of homemade cookies to mix and match. We are taking a limited number of preorders if you would like us to put a selection aside for you. The variety and quality of cookies makes it nice for those that may want only a few of each type.

Bruce Rubin a local author will do a book talk and signing on November 29 at 7 pm. His new book, Small-Town Weekly, subtitled A Year in the Life of an Itinerant Newspaper Editor is a fictional tale that he spins using his experiences as a newspaper and magazine editor. As always, we will have free refreshments.

Hope you to see you in the stacks.
