new edifice (which, by the way, still has the appealing “new car” smell!).  It also comprises: the taxpayers whose wisdom and
initiative finances the new facility, over 2,800 card carrying patrons who
peruse the nearly 30,000 items in our growing
collection or who surf the Internet on our network of eleven public access
computers, the Library Trustees whose leadership pulls it all together and, so important, a cheerful, multi-generational staff whose
professionalism  I’ve come to appreciate and rely upon day after day.
Thank you, all!

Has it occurred to you how many ways the Library contributes to a greener
Waterville?  I’m talking about green as in how we address the “inconvenient truths” we’ve received notice about from this year’s Nobel Peace Prize winners.   To name a few-- our architects built in several energy saving features,
including motion sensitive fluorescent lighting and a computer controlled high efficiency HVAC
system.  We’re located
conveniently near the village’s center, within
walking distance for most of our population.  Centralized purchasing and stewardship of shareable, reusable
 resources, i.e., books,

magazines, newspapers and audio-visual materials is the essence of public libraries and truly obviates
individual, redundant
purchasing of these items.  And, of course, we maintain a free gateway to information about practical conservation measures and initiatives in our society.

Wrapping up my first year here at the Library I wish to express my
gratitude to the citizens of Waterville Central School District for the wonderful professional opportunity you’ve given me.  Your Library, now in its 133
rd year, encompasses much more than this
thoughtfully conceived
