  • International Reading Association (http://www.reading.org)
    "The International Reading Association is a professional membership organization dedicated to promoting high levels of literacy for all by improving the quality of reading instruction, disseminating research and information about reading, and encouraging the lifetime reading habit. Our members include classroom teachers, reading specialists, consultants, administrators, supervisors, university faculty, researchers, psychologists, librarians, media specialists, and parents." This site is primarily for professionals who teach reading rather than those who are interested in learning to read.
  • National Center on Adult Literacy (http://www.literacyonline.org/ncal.html)
    NCAL was established in 1990 as part of the University of Pennsylvania's Graduate School of Education "to improve understanding of youth and adult Learning, to foster innovation and increase effectiveness in youth and adult basic education and literacy work, and to expand access to information and build capacity for literacy and basic skills service provision" through "engaging in cutting-edge and high-impact research, innovation, and training in youth and adult education." The current project link on this site is of special interest.
  • National Center for ESL Literacy Education (http://www.cal.org/NCLE)
    NCLE, established by Congess, "is the only national information center focusing on the language and literacy education of adults and out-of-school youth learning English." NCLE provides information to "teachers and tutors, program directors, researchers, and policymakers interested in the education of refugees, immigrants, and other U.S. residents whose native language is other than English."
  • National Institute for Literacy (http://www.nifl.gov)
    Created by the National Literacy Act of 1991 this independent federal office's goal is "to ensure that all Americans with literacy needs have access to services that can help them gain the basic skills necessary for success in the workplace, family, and community in the 21st century." NIFL is currently engaged in eight projects including: "Literacy and Learning Disabilities", "Equipped for the Future", "Policy and Legislation"
  • New Readers Press (http://www.newreaderspress.com)
    New Readers Press is the publishing division of Laubach Literacy and provides "instructional and supplemental materials" for teens, adults and ESL students. One of their most popular resources is the weekly newspaper "News for You" written for literacy students. This newspaper written at a 4th grade reading level covers all of the world and national news for the week.

  • ProLiteracy Worldwide (http://www.proliteracy.org/) A nonprofit international literacy organization based in Syracuse, NY, that was formed by the 2002 merger of Laubach Literacy International and Literacy Volunteers of America, Inc. It is now the oldest and largest nongovernmental literacy organization in the world. It pursues a mission of sponsoring educational programs that help adults and their families acquire the literacy practices and skills they need to function more effectively in their daily lives.
