WELCOME

Reading between the Lines, funded by the New York Council for the Humanities, is an intergenerational program of reading, storytelling and discussion that is designed for children between the ages of 6 and 10 who have reading difficulties and their parents. The program is held once a week for an hour-and-a-half over a six-week period, usually in October and November.

Reading between the Lines features:

  • Award winning children’s books that stimulate discussion around special themes,
  • A professional storyteller who models read-aloud techniques and
  • A humanities scholar who serves as a discussion leader.

With the cooperation of the Oneida City School District , the Oneida Public Library has hosted five programs of Reading between the Lines since the year 2000. Both children and parents who have attended have raved about it. After the program, children tend to do better in the language arts in school and, at home, they reinforce their bonds with parents by reading and discussing books.

The next Reading between the Lines program at the Oneida Public Library is scheduled for fall 2005.

Storyteller Beth Tegart leads off a session of Reading between the Lines.
