Project Read
takes its show
on the road

The Oneida Public Library has taken its successful one-on-one adult literacy tutoring program on the road to Bridgeport, Eaton and Hamilton in Madison County thanks to a $29,900 grant from the Central New York Community Foundation.

The new program, called Madison County Reads Ahead, offers tutoring, modeled on the Project Read method, at the Bridgeport Branch of the Sullivan Free Library, the Morrisville Public Library, the Community Action Building in Morrisville and the Hamilton Public Library. In 2007, a fourth satellite will be opened up at the Cazenovia Public Library to serve adults in Cazenovia and communities like DeRuyter and New Woodstock to the south.

Morris Atwood, formerly the coordinator of Project Read’s ESOL literacy services program, heads the new program. Those interested in becoming volunteer literacy tutors or in becoming students should contact him at (315) 761-2525.

The Project Read Literacy Program at the Oneida Public Library began in 2000 with a grant from the New York State Library. Our goal is to provide free services in basic literacy for adults 18 years of age and older in the Greater Oneida Area.

Since then, through grant renewals, Project Read has expanded. In 2002, an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) component was added in response to requests from speakers of other languages who settled in our community.

Currently, Project Read offers free one-on-one tutoring by trained literacy volunteers for learners seeking help with basic English reading, writing and conversing and for speakers of other languages who want to learn English.

Project Read at the Oneida Public Library is supported by the Project Read Literacy Coalition, which comprises representatives of several local agencies that provide a variety of social services. These agencies have referred people needing literacy services to Project Read, and their participation has been a key to the success of our program.

MISSION STATEMENT
The Mission of the Oneida Public Library’s Project Read Literacy Program is to provide free quality literacy services in a friendly, professional and confidential environment for adults in the Greater Oneida Area who wish to learn to read, write and converse in English at a higher level of proficiency; and to connect these learners to community services and resources that will enhance their quality of life. Project Read will achieve its goals through the help of well-trained and highly motivated volunteer tutors and with the support of its coalition partners from local service providers.
