Project Read offers Oneida area adults 18 years of age and older with low literacy skills a real chance to improve their English reading, writing and verbal communication abilities. The program’s Adult Basic Literacy Services provide free one-on-one tutoring on a flexible schedule and offer child care and transportation for the tutorials as well as family and job-counseling support.
Project Read’s volunteer tutors are trained by education specialists from Literacy Volunteers of America/MidYork, Inc. They receive 12 hours of classroom instruction, including real-life demonstrations of meetings between tutors and learners. In addition, they complete a six-hour practicum in which trainers supervise their initial meetings with learners. Twice a year, tutors attend special workshops to expand their understanding of the reading process and to learn more about diagnosing problems and remediation strategies for learners with special needs. In Project Read, the tutor’s goal from the beginning is to get the adult learner actively |
involved in the education process and to collaborate in both teaching and learning. A learner starts out by telling the tutor a story of a personal experience, and the tutor derives from this story lessons in spelling, phonics, vocabulary and grammar. Learners themselves set the goals for each tutorial session. |

Most tutorial sessions, whether day or evening, are held in the Oneida Public Library’s Literacy Classroom during regular library hours. But tutors and learners can arrange to meet at other public libraries in the area.
