Fall is in full swing. I guess we can finally say that summer
is over! That's alright; we still have lots of things happening
to keep everyone busy! Preschool Story Hour is full of activities!
On October 7, bring your children in to learn about autumn and
make a fall tree. October 14, they can learn about fire prevention
and if the weather holds out, meet a fireman and see a fire truck.
There is lots of fun and learning for your preschool child or
grandchild! Be sure to come in and check out the children's
room bulletin board. Pictures of all story hour participants
are posted along with their favorite book. This exhibit will
be displayed the entire month of October as our "Books are
a Bushel of Fun" theme. Anyone wishing to get a complete
list of topics for story hour may inquire at the circulation
desk.
The Shipping News adult book talk is this Friday October 3
at 7pm. Morrisville State professor Roxanna Pisiak will be facilitating.
We still have a few copies left if you would like to join this
enlightening discussion. Inquire at the circulation desk.
On display now in the library are various pictures of the
community, including several area businesses and landmarks taken
by Morrisville State's Principle's of Photography class. The
project was sponsored by the SUNY Morrisville Alumni Foundation.
Come in and see our village in a different light.
We would like to congratulate Ben Thomas, contest winner of
the 2003 New York State Summer Reading Program. Ben was selected
from thousands of entries across Madison County. He has received
assorted books as a prize from the Scholastic Publishing Company.
Some titles are: A Hive for a Honey Bee, The Moonlight Man,
and The Mouse Rap. Congratulations Ben!
A big thank you goes out to the Snodgrass family for donating
several books to the library. In case you forgot, we have a
book cart with books for sale on it. If you want to buy a book,
stop in and find the one for you! Paperbacks are 2 for $1.00
and hardcovers are $1.00 each.
We have lots of new books this week to talk about! First
off, I must comment on The Concise Animal Encyclopedia. It was
an award given to the library for a successful Summer Reading
Program by the Mid York Library System. Be sure to bring your
children in next summer for "Read, White and Blue 2004".
It's sure to be an exciting and fun time for all! Other new
books this week include: in juvenile non fiction three skateboarding
books- A Beginner's Guide to Very Cool Skateboarding Tricks,
Advanced Skateboarding: from Kick Tricks to Catching Air, Tony
Hawk: Skateboarding Champion and also two books talking about
the terrorist attacks on America September 11, 2001. They are:
The Crash of United Flight 93 on September 11, 2001 and The Attack
on the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. These books are well
written but graphic. I don't recommend them to primary school
children but they are a great resource for middle and high school
students.
For our adult readers we have several new fiction books.
The Kill Clause by Gregg Hurwitz: "Hurwitz digs deep into
Rackley's agonizing break with his wife, and he writes well about
violence and the specifics of some terrible crimes," says
The Washington Post. Judgment Calls by Alafair Burke: "The
first of a series about an ambitious young assistant district
attorney, Samantha Kincaid, who is struggling to make a name
for herself while putting away drug dealers and rapists,"
says USA Today. Loose Lips by Claire Berlinski: "The novel's
main attraction is an Orwellian atmosphere of suspicion that
builds so effectively that, by the time Selena learns she has
been betrayed by someone close to her, readers will be unsure
whom she can trust. What first looks like a light summer read
turns out to be a chilling, absorbing story," says The Washington
Post. Be sure to stop in and browse over our new titles. These
are just a few of many we have received this past week. We are
open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 12 - 8 pm, Tuesday and Thursday
10 - 1:30 pm and Saturday 10 - 2pm.
