MORRISVILLE LIBRARY NEWS
by Mary Brown
September is Library Card Sign-up Month. Come to the
Morrisville Library on Friday, September 21st from 3:30 - 5:00
p.m. for your FREE library card, an informal book tour and other
goodies! There will be refreshments and free books for you to
take home.
If you don't have a library card, here is your chance
to join in all the great activities at our library. Come to the
library and you can join a book discussion group, sign out a
great book, magazine, video or CD, browse your favorite websites,
attend pre-school story hour with a child, attend a lecture or
workshop, see a new art exhibit, learn how to use a computer,
trace your family tree, or even just find a quiet spot to curl
up with a good book. Get the card that pays you back over and
over.
Coming up soon is the first evening of the fall Book Talk
series. On Friday, October 19th at 7 p.m. Professor Roxanna
Pisiak of SUNY Morrisville will lead a discussion of Jostein
Gaarder's Sophie's World: A Novel about the History of Philosophy.
Reserve a copy of the book at the circulation desk and get ready
for an interesting evening of discussion.
Later in October, the fall Pre-School Story Hour series
with Grandma B. will be starting up again. Watch for the dates
and times.
Traci has ordered some new books, and is looking for some
nice "parents" to adopt them. Any assistance with
purchasing them would be a big help. Just look at the list of
potential adoptees at the circulation desk, and tell Traci if
you can help. New books looking for a parent include some great
new releases. The Other Wind by Ursula Leguin is her new novel-length
addition to the Earthsea universe.
Robert Parker's Death in Paradise is the third of his Jesse
Stone mysteries; it follows Jesse, now sheriff of small-town
Paradise, Mass., as he tackles two criminal and two personal
mysteries: the murder of a teenage girl found shot dead in a
local lake, and the chronic beating of a local wife by her husband.
Anne Perry's Funeral in Blue follows William Monk and wife,
Hester on the case when two women are found strangled in an artist's
studio. The case is especially important to them because one
of the women is the wife of Hester's beloved colleague, Dr. Kristian
Beck. Nicholas Sparks fans will want to consider adopting his
new A Bend in the Road in which deputy sheriff, Miles Ryan loses
his wife, and lives in a haze until he meets second grade teacher
, Sarah Andrews; of course, love is never that easy as they
find out when the secrets start being revealed. There are several
other great new books just waiting for someone to help finance
their adoption; check the list and help the library add some
new "young 'uns" to its family.
On the music front, we now have a copy of Morrisville's
own band "Jhawn"s CD. The group recorded their first
CD in Hamilton, and we have one to let you borrow! In the group
are: Emily Schuster, vocals and flute; Paul Maddison, lead guitar;
Matt Golley, sax; Jayson Parker, percussion; Ben Slocum, bass
guitar and Darrell Bush, rhythm guitar and vocals. All but one
of the songs are written and performed by the group!
One of our loyal Friends of the Library, Maxine Hunter,
is currently showing her latest watercolors in an exhibition,
"Rediscovering the Landscape" at the SUNY Morrisville
Library's gallery from September 17th through October 14th.
If you have seen any of Maxine's works that have been exhibited
here at the library, you know what a talented artist she is,
and will want to stop by the SUNY Library to see her latest paintings.
Our celebration of Library Card Sign-Up Month is the perfect
excuse to stop by your local library and join in the fun and
adventure. We hope you come in to sign-up and become part of
our Morrisville Library family.
