MORRISVILLE LIBRARY NEWS
by Mary Brown
Happy New Year from the Morrisville Public Library!
2003 should be a wonderful year for the library since it will
mark our new status as School District Library. Additionally,
the library will be open five additional hours each week. The
new library hours will be from noon until 8 p.m. on Mondays,
Wednesdays and Fridays, from 10 a.m. till 1:30 p.m. on Tuesdays
and Thursdays and from 10 a.m. till 2 p.m. on Saturdays.
Starting off the New Year will be the first session of
Spanish Language Tutoring from 4-5 p.m. on January 8th in the
program room; this program will continue on Wednesdays throughout
January. On Saturday, January 11th, a Pine Cone Bird Seed Feeder
Project, led by Janine Ashcraft, will be held from 10:30 - 11:30
a.m. for children up through third grade. On Wednesday, January
29th, at 7 p.m., John Rogers will be presenting "All About
Bluebirds and More"; this talk is free and open to the public.
Put these events on your calendar now.
We also have some great new books to start off the New
Year. Remember, you can reserve any books mentioned in this
column by going to the "Morrisville Library News" section
of the library's website (www.midyork.org/morrisville) and clicking
on the title of the book in the column in which it was mentioned.
You will then get clear directions how to reserve the book.
The Last Promise by Richard Paul Evans is a story of a young
American woman who marries an Italian man, moves to Italy, has
his child and lives a very lonely life in a loveless marriage.
When she meets an American art lover, they become fast friends
and soon fall in love. Children of Cain by Miriam Grace Monfredo,
the concluding volume of the Cain trilogy, again brings the Civil
War to life from a woman's point of view. The Terrorist Next
Door by Daniel Levitas explores the roots of Far Right hate groups
in the U.S., how they have developed , and how the government
has responded or failed to respond to this internal threat.
Origami lovers will want to try Origami to Astonish and Amuse
by Jeremy Shafer; it includes excellent models for different
skills ( simple, low-intermediate, intermediate, high-intermediate
and complex) and different interests: Action Models, from beginners
(Baby Bird, Men's Suit), intermediate (clapping hands), high
intermediate (surfer on a wave), to complex (nail clippers),
and in other areas like Symbols and Signs (some billfolds, a
pyramid and a balancing eagle that poses at the top of the pyramid).
For our 9-12 year old readers, The Thief Lord by Cornelia
Caroline Funke is a suspenseful novel about thieving children,
a disguise-obsessed detective and a magical merry-go-round.
With new funding arriving in 2003, Barb is eager to purchase
some new books. She would love to get some suggestions from our
patrons. Be sure to let her know about any books you think our
library readers might enjoy.
Make a New Year's resolution this week to visit your local
library regularly and enjoy all the wonderful resources we have
to offer adults and children alike.
