MORRISVILLE LIBRARY NEWS
by Mary Brown
The bidding has begun! The Third Annual Holiday Silent
Auction has now begun at the library. Come in, sign up for a
bidding number, and start placing your bids on the auction items
all nicely displayed in the program room. You might be able
to do most of your holiday shopping right here!
Among the wonderful items on the auction block are two gorgeous
quilts made by Ethel Crane, a darling baby quilt and pillow done
by Nancy McPherson, and a lovely baby afghan hand crocheted by
Bette Slocum. Two beautiful framed watercolors, one by Maxine
Hunter and one by Ralph Murray would make someone very happy
this Christmas! Or, if you need to relieve the stress of the
holiday season, bid on the gift certificates for a healing massage
or for dinner out at some nice local restaurants. If you'd rather
cook in, bid on the new rice cooker or the Martha Stewart cookbook.
Other great auction items include a wonderful big Longaberger
sewing basket, a direct TV system, a set of The Cat Who
mystery books, decorative pillows, nice houseplants, and goose-themed
kitchen items. If you are looking for unique antique or collectible
gift items, be sure to bid on the flame hobnail vase, the broad-rimmed,
etched glass centerpiece bowl, the vintage Rockem Sockem robots
or the Antique Toytown, Plains Indian diorama or Build Your Own
Pagoda books.
These are just a sample of some of the great items now up
for auction at the library. The Silent Auction extends to Monday,
December 16th.
The recent "Thank You" Reception for Traci Schuster
was a lovely event. A good crowd enjoyed the ambiance of Madison
Hall and the chance to thank Traci, to chat with friends and
to enjoy the nice refreshments catered by Linda Puddington.
Attending the event were Morrisville Mayor Henry Douglas, Eaton
Town Supervisior Dave Puddington, MidYork Library System Director,
Mary Lou Caskey and Assistant Director, Ann Harris. Also, former
Morrisville Library Directors, Pat Congdon, Bev Devlin and Brenda
Hasagawa joined current Interim Director, Barb Fogg in wishing
Traci well. Traci' s parents and her husband, John, were also
present and honored for their support of Traci. Gratia Burleigh,
President of the Friends of the Library, did a wonderful job
organizing the event and acting as emcee. The Friends gave a
children's room bulletin board and a fine plaque to the library
in honor of Traci. The Library Board of Trustees unveiled a
new framed School District Library charter and gave Traci a small
framed memento of all the work she did to get that new designation
for the library. It was a memorable event for a memorable woman!
December is a busy month for the library. In addition to
the silent auction, the library will host the Adult Book Talk
series again this Friday, December 6th at 7 p.m., when Professor
Roxanna Pisiak will facilitate a discussion of Leif Enger's Peace
Like a River. The Annual Holiday Open House will be held on
Friday, December 13th from 1-5 p.m. This year, the theme for
the library's holiday decorations and tree will be characters
from books. Stop in and enjoy the decorations. Maybe Clifford
the dog is dressed as Santa, or Pippi Longstocking, the Cat in
the Hat and Curious George are sitting on the tree branches.
It will surely be a festive few weeks at the library.
There are several new book arrivals this week. Killjoy by
Julie Greenwood is a suspense thriller in which FBI crime analyst,
Avery Delaney, tries to outmaneuver a brilliant killer to save
her beloved aunt. Abraham by Bruce Feiler is a biography of one
man who united the world's major religions, Christianity, Islam
and Judaism. The first half tells what the Bible and Koran say
about Abraham and the second half relates these stories to contemporary
religious and political conflicts. Shrink Rap, Robert Parker's
third Sunny Randall novel, follows Sunny as she is bodyguard
for a famous romance writer being stalked by her psychiatrist
ex-husband. In Let's Roll by Lisa Beamer, the wife of one of
the men who stopped the third 9-11 hijacked plane from hitting
its destination, tells of her husband's life that ended prematurely
in his heroic but fatal efforts.
For our younger readers, Brave Norman, Watch Out, Otto,
Ringo Saves the Day and Happy Christmas, Honey are all new additions
to our Ready-to-Read book collection. Also in are Thanksgiving
on Thursday from the Magic Treehouse series, Amazing Magnetism
from the Magic School Bus series, and Oasis from the Dinotopia
series.
December is a fine time to visit the Morrisville Library.
You can enjoy the holiday decorations and Open House. You can
have fun "shopping" at the Silent Auction. And, of
course, you can sign out books, magazines, CD's and videos that
will relax you during this hectic holiday season.
