MORRISVILLE LIBRARY NEWS
by Mary Brown
Please consider the School District Library proposition
coming up for a vote next Tuesday, May 21st , from 1 - 9 p.m.
at the Edward Andrews Elementary School. The School District
Library that would be chartered by an approved proposition would
provide more support for the library from a wider tax base.
Our current budget of $35,601. is woefully inadequate and has
been for several years. Today, it would be difficult to run a
household decently on that amount. Imagine trying to run a successful
business on so little. The library is a business; our mission
is to provide citizens of our district with the same level of
access to the world of information, education and entertainment
that is available to people elsewhere. In order to accomplish
this, we must adequately compensate our present staff and be
able to hire at least one more library technician. We must be
able to purchase books and other resources for our patrons to
use, and we must pay for supplies, heat, lawn maintenance, snow
plowing, insurance, fees for payroll, bookkeeping and legal services.
A new budget of $60,000 would provide these services to all
the people served by our library district, and the people deserve
no less. Please vote "YES" to the School District
Library proposition on May 21st.
Here's a quick reminder to all our patrons that the library
will be closed on Friday, May 24th through Monday, May 27th for
the Memorial Day weekend. We will re-open on Tuesday, May 28th
at 10 a.m.
Thanks to Andrew Quick and Justin Crandall who are starting
a writer's club for kids ages 13 and under who want to trying
their hand at writing. As they say in their flyer, "We will
be discussing new topics each month. This month is fantasy/Sci-Fi
month. Writing games and activities will also be a part of the
writer's club meetings that will be held at the library."
For more information on future meeting times, contact Andrew
@684-7428, or call the library @ 684-9130.
The library is having a Mystery Book Sale in the front hall
this month. We are selling hardcovers @ $1.00 each, or 3 for
$2.00. paperbacks are $.50 each or 3 for $1.00. Our many mystery
fans will want to take advantage of these bargains.
Take advantage of another major bargain at the library
this month. May is Amnesty Month at the library. We will forgive
any overdue fines this month if you return any long-lost (or
temporarily misplaced) library books. Please do not stuff the
drop box; just bring back books all month with no fine or late
charges.
Come in this month and see the wonderful exhibit of one
hundred photos of Morrisville life on display in the program
room. This great display is the work of Pat Swann's photographic
journalism class at SUNY Morrisville. Thanks goes out this week
to another SUNY Journalism student, Sarah Hansen, who recently
acted as one of our recent poetry contest judges. We have many
talented SUNY students living in our midst.
Another delightful Pre-School Story Hour with Grandma
B is on the agenda for next week. On Tuesday, May 21st. Grandma
will be exploring the creepy, crawly world of insects and spiders.
Don't worry; she'll make it seem very "un-creepy" for
the little ones! Bring them in for an hour of fun.
Someone recently returned our Cat in the Hat video box
with a video of Disney's 101 Dalmations in it! Please come in
and trade!
We have some new additions to our collection to report,
mostly due to generous donations and adoptions. Remember that
you can order any of the books mentioned in this column simply
by clicking on the title and completing the order form at our
website version of each week's Morrisville Library News column
. The videos Funny Girl , Funny Lady, and the children's video,
The Amazing Panda Adventure , along with the audiobook, Elmore
Leonard's Tishemingo Blues have all been gifted to us. 24 Hours

tale by David Wiesner, has also just arrived. For 8-12 years
olds, we now have The Story of the Olympics by Dave Anderson
and Linda Peck's 2002 Newbery Award winning A Single Shard,
a heartwarming story of a young boy, an apprentice potter, who
takes on a harsh adventure to prove himself to his mentor.
Barbara Taylor Bradford fans will want to sign out Three
Weeks in Paris , which examines the lives of four women, alumnae
of an exclusive arts school in Paris, who must confront their
stormy pasts when they are invited to attend a special birthday
party. Bernard Lewis' What Went Wrong: Western Impact and Middle
Eastern Response is a survey of how Islamic civilization fell
from worldwide leadership five or six centuries ago to one that
is today dominated by tyrannies of repression and terror. Characters
in Mythology by William Farrell, who recently gave an interesting
presentation at the library about his new book on classical place
names, is a collection of stories about creatures and people
from ancient Greek and Roman times.
Bring in those overdue books this week. Enjoy our exciting
photo show in the program room. Pick up information on the School
District Library proposal at the circulation desk, and vote YES
on May 21st to help your library stay open and active.
