MORRISVILLE LIBRARY NEWS February 23, 2001
by Mary Brown
Please consider adopting! We promise no diapers to change,
no 2 a.m. feedings and no dirty hands to wash. The library is
beginning an ADOPT A BOOK campaign or , if you'd like, ADOPT
A VIDEO, or ADOPT A CD. Come in and see the list of "orphan"
books, videos and CD's that the library wants to welcome to its
home, but can't afford to. For a very reasonable donation, you
can "adopt" the book, video or CD, and we will house
it and take care of it for the rest of its life! Stop by this
week, look over the list of "orphans" waiting to be
adopted, and pick up your adoption papers at the circulation
desk. And if you don't see an orphan that's just right for you,
pick up a suggestion form at the desk; fill in your ideas for
a book, video, CD or other item you would like to see the library
purchase, and maybe even offer to help us purchase it.
You can probably tell that our local funds for purchasing new
books is running very low, but you can help us. You can help
increase state funding for libraries by writing to the local
office of Assemblyman William Magee, 214 Farrier Ave., Oneida,
NY 13421 and Senator Nancy Larraine Hoffmann, Senate Office Building,
Room 813, 33 E. Washington Street, Syracuse, NY 13202. In your
letters, ask that your legislators support the new bill for increased
financial support of public libraries in New York State. Tell
them that you support your local library and want them to do
so too by voting for this bill.
To prepare for the upcoming Young People's Poetry Week, the library
is sponsoring a Poetry Contest for children ages 8 - 12. Children
can write and submit an original poem any time between now and
April 22nd. The box for poetry entries is in the front hall of
the library. When you submit your poem, stop at the circulation
desk and pick up your prize, just for entering the contest. Winners
will be announced the first week in May.
Also in the front lobby this week is a new Mini - Sale of gently
used videos, thanks to a generous donation by Sautter's Video
Store. The videos are on sale for one dollar each or six for
five dollars.
April 6th is the date for the next Book Talk with Professor Roxanna
Pisiak. This one is a discussion of Barbara Kingsolver's The
Poisonwood Bible. You can sign out copies of the novel at the
circulation desk to prepare for this interesting evening.
A few new books have arrived this week. The Villa by popular
Nora Roberts heads the list. Set in Napa, California, this novel
focuses on two winemaking families, the threats against them,
and the romance of members of the two families. Roberts fans
will want to sign this out right away. Stephen King's Dreamcatcher
sees King return to his exciting tales of horror with a story
of bodysnatching aliens threatening to take over the planet.
Richard Rayner's The Cloud Sketcher is an historical epic of
politics, murder and the mob as well as of love, music and the
cruelty of fate. Plain Jane by Fern Michaels is a suspenseful
romance about Jane Lewis, a woman with a thriving psychiatric
practice, a popular radio call-in show, and the attentions of
one seriously attractive man. However, she is haunted by an event
from her past and by a ghost in her house, all of which make
for an entertaining page-turner.
James Patterson's First to Die is a clever kick-off to his new
series about the Women's Murder Club. This suspenseful novel
pits four San Francisco women professionals against a serial
killer who's stalking and murdering people on the happiest day
of their lives. As the women appear to have the case solved,
the tables are suddenly turned on them, and readers will never
guess what's coming! Lisa Scottline's The Vendetta Defense is
a legal thriller focusing on defendant, Pigeon Tony, who's on
trial for killing the man who destroyed his wife, his son and
daughter-in-law, and has threatened the life of his grandson.
When Tony tells his lawyer that this murder was a vendetta, a
justifiable payback for a blood crime, new complications quickly
come to the surface.
In nonfiction, David Fontana's The Secret Language of Dream analyzes
more than 50 major themes and symbols in dreams. Tudor Costume
and Fashion by Herbert Norris tells and shows all about 16th
century English Tudor clothing and accessories. Coleen Hubbard's
Big Purple Mommy is a book about mothers trying to be creative
while also being fully committed to raising great kids. Any woman
trying to balance nurturing themselves and their own work with
nurturing their children will enjoy this one.
Our fine listeners might want to sign out the new audiobook,
Omerta by Mario Puzo, or the wonderful new copy of "Requiem"
by Mozart CD.
Remember your ABC's this week --- Adopt a Book Campaign. Those
"orphan" books, videos, and CD's are waiting for your
support - and you can help them find a home right here in your
local library on Main Street.
