A Bibliography of Oneida, Madison, & Herkimer County Authors, 1798-2004

About This Site

This bibliography was created by Mary Lou Caskey, Director of the Mid-York Library System, Utica, NY, from information collected from the library catalog and people throughout the county.

A paper version, published in March 1998, is available at local libraries. Individual copies are available for purchase at local libraries for $5 per copy.

This Web version includes works edited by Oneida, Madison, and Herkimer County residents, as well as those for which they are the author or co-author.

The bibliography is organized alphabetically by location (cities, towns, villages). This Web version is divided into sections. The Index by Location provides a quick way to jump to the section for a specific location. The Index by Author is in alphabetical order by last name. Each name is linked to the location under which the author is listed.

Dedication

This bibliography is dedicated to Marshal Smith, without whom it would not have been possible.

Scope

This bibliography includes authors living and deceased who were born or at one time lived or worked in Oneida, Madison, or Herkimer County, New York. If the person was born in one community but lived in others, he or she is listed in the latest place of residence. Often the high school from which the author graduated is the determining factor.

When there was uncertainty about the author's place of residence, the title was listed under the community the book is about.

When a title main entry is used instead of a personal name, an effort is made to list all of the contributing authors that are local.

The book, both fiction and non-fiction, is the only format included. Magazine and newspaper articles, technical papers, scholarly works such as doctoral dissertations, and musical compositions are not included. Items that were only edited by a local author are not included either, unless the book is of local interest.

Some titles are available in large type, some as sound recordings (books on cassette) and some have been made into movies and are available on video cassette. Bibliographic information about these alternate formats is not included on these pages.

If you wish to read one of the books listed here visit your local public library and make an interlibrary loan request.
