For Beginning Readers
Reading is hard work when you are just starting. Stories you can read yourself may be a disappointment. They are less exciting than the ones you’ve listened to. So gifts of books to be read aloud are still very welcome. Be sure the books you choose for a beginning reader to read alone are easy enough not to discourage. A little too easy is better than a little too hard. This is also a good time for an attractive collection of fairy tales for listening to now and reading later. A fat richly illustrated beginning dictionary can be an acknowledgement of the child’s new more grown up status. Don’t forget some kids prefer true books so consider non-fiction. Here is some advice from the International Reading Association.
