The Frank J. Basloe Library offers access to electronic resources, including the Internet, as part of its mission to provide services and materials in a variety of formats to meet the information, education and recreation needs of the community. The library considers its endorsement of the Library Bill of Rights and the Freedom to Read documents to apply as well to access to and use of such electronic information.
The Internet is a continually developing global collection of computer networks that connects millions of computers all over the world. The library's access to the Internet, including the World Wide Web, is provided through the Mid-York Library system. The Frank J. Basloe Library and the Mid-York Library System do not warrant information found on the Internet to be accurate, authoritative, factual, timely, or useful for patrons' purposes. Some sites may contain controversial or illegal material, and some may be unavailable at times. Neither the Frank J. Basloe Library nor the Mid-York Library System monitors or has control over the information available through the Internet, and they are not responsible or liable for its contents.
It is the Frank J. Basloe Library's policy that parents or legal guardians are responsible for monitoring what library materials and resources, including Internet access, are appropriate for their minor children, defined by New York State as under 17. Therefore, a parent or legal guardian may indicate their desire to deny access to the Internet for their minor children by informing the Frank J. Basloe Library in writing and having the minor's library card so marked. Staff will inform any minor child with a marked card that their parent or legal guardian does not want them to access the Internet at the library.
Inappropriate use of the terminals or the Internet access can result in suspension and possible cancellation of the privilege to use this resource. Examples of inappropriate use include, but are not limited to, the following:
Illegal acts through use of library computer terminals may also be subject to prosecution by local, state, or federal authorities.
The library reserves the right to enforce a time limit of thirty (30) minutes per session. Patrons will be limited to two (2) sessions per day to allow for maximum use by all. Printing will be limited to that which can be completed within the allotted time at a cost of fifteen cents per sheet.
The library staff is available to assist users with the Internet but as time permits, but they cannot provide individualized instruction.
This policy may be revised from time to time by resolution
of the Board of Trustees.
