PROSPECT FREE LIBRARY
COMPUTER USE POLICY

The Prospect Free Library owns a computer, printer, and software.

Providing public access to a microcomputer is a service the library is happy to to offer. However, to ensure smooth service the following rules have been established by the Library Board.

Rules of Use

In order to use the library's microcomputer and printer patrons must:

  1. Have a valid Mid-York library card.
  2. Read the orientation to the computer brochure or attend a free microcomputer orientation course offered at the library when available.
  3. Sign the Computer Log In and Log Out book found at the Circulation Desk.
  4. Patrons must be in the sixth grade or higher to utilize the computer unaccompanied. Patrons under the sixth grade limit may use the computer only if accompanied by an adult while using the computer.

Reserving Computer Time

A patron may reserve time to use the microcomputer. Reservations may be made either in person or by telephone during library hours, up to two weeks in advance.

Reservations will be logged in the Computer Log Book. Time is reserved in one hour blocks. If the computer is not reserved, it is. available on a first come, first served basis. Individuals using the microcomputer on reserved time may continue to use the microcomputer if it is free or until bumped by someone having the next reserved appointment or by someone who would like to walk in. Unless they reserve time before using the computer upon first entering the library, walk ins can be bumped at any time by someone with reserved time.

Patrons who are late for their reserved time should call the library. If no call is received, the computer will be held for only ten minutes, after which reservations are forfeited. Microcomputer time is not transferable to any other person, including family members.

Computer users must be conscious of the time, and be prepared to make the computer available to the next user promptly.

No eating, drinking, or smoking is ever permitted. Magnets and paper clips should be kept away from the computer. Users will be liable for all missing or damaged discs, hardware, and print materials.

Files may not be stored on the computer's hard drive. Patrons must bring their own 3 1/2 floppies to save their work. Discs should not be left at the library.

Print Outs

A fee of $.10 will be charged for each copy from the printer. This charge helps to offset the cost of paper and printer cartridge. This fee remains even if the patron chooses to thing his own paper. Printouts (drafts and final copies) may be paid for at the circulation desk at the time the patron sign out.

Software

Programs owned by the library are stored at the Circulation Desk and must be signed out to be used. Only library owned software may be used on the library's equipment.

Illegal Copying of Software is a crime! The Library's software is protected under the Copyright Law of the United States of America, Title 17, US Code. Patrons may not make illegal copies of the library's software, nor may they use the library's equipment to illegally duplicate other software. Automatic suspension of computer use privileges will result for a period of six months. The library is not responsible for the illegal actions of patrons.

The Library is not responsible for damage to or loss of data while using the library's equipment. If there is a problem, patrons should not try to fix it. Rather all problems should be reported to the Circulation Desk

Failure to abide by these rules or other library rules may result in loss of microcomputer use privileges. These rules are subject to change.

Adopted June, 1994
