Computers are an important tool affording access, via specialized software and the Internet, to an immeasurable amount of information for both educational and recreational use. Increased patron interest in computers, the growing amount of information exclusive to the Internet, and student demand for access to both, prompts our decision to make this reference tool available at the C.W. Clark Memorial Library.
As with other items provided by the library, computers and specifically the Internet are subject to rules that ensure fair use, protect the equipment, the user and the library. All users must have a valid library card and strictly adhere to the written rules. Abuse of the rules will result in loss of computer and/or Internet use rights for specified time period. Repeat or severe misuse of the rules will result in loss of all library privileges.
C.W. Clark Memorial Library does not endorse, validate or assume responsibility for information on the Internet or from any other reference source. Offensive material, personal opinions, opposing viewpoints and misinformation may be presented and accessed on the Internet. It is the library's policy not to censor any material but to allow each customer, regardless of age, to make their own choices. We do, however, highly recommend that parents become involved in their child's choices. We feel strongly that the selection or limiting of library materials, whether print, video or electronic, is a parental responsibility not a library staff duty.
With this in mind, and to keep from imposing on a patron's freedom of choice, we will not be using filtering software. We will make every effort to ensure privacy of all patron transactions, including Internet use. The computer log will remain confidential, as well as any knowledge by staff of information sought, received, borrowed, acquired or transmitted. Technical assistance is available from library staff, limited by time and expertise. Users are required to attend an introduction to computers program or demonstrate their computer knowledge prior to initial use of the equipment.
