Money Magazine. provides access to full text of its articles from July 1986 to present. Can search archives by keywords or author.    Fortune Magazine: Selected highlights, including the cover story and technology features, from the two most recent magazine issues are available. All Web-only features, such as Street Life, the Career Resource Center and the FORTUNE 500, are free. For articles from 1995 to the present searching and reading article summaries is free. Viewing a complete article costs $2.95.

 Bloomberg Financial    SmartMoney Magazine. Recommended by Honorine Wallack, Certified Financial Planner and speaker at the 1999 Mid-York Staff Development day workshop, this web version of the Wall Street Journal Magazine of Personal Business includes updates of the day's market, tracking of personal stocks, a personal investment & financial planning section, the latest news, and much more.
The New York Stock Exchange. Current information and a great description of the stock exchange and its history.    EDGAR Database for Corporate Information. The Securites and Exchange Commission's database of SEC filings plus useful online publications and notifications for investors.
 Thomas Register. Requires free registration but offers much of the same information that the unwieldly print editions provide.

 Consumer.gov. Your resource for consumer information from the federal government, which includes how to file a complaint, consumer issues "In the Spotlight," Special Projects and covers such subject areas as food, product safety, health, home & community, transportation, children, careers & education, and technology.    ConsumerWorld. "A public service, non-commercial guide cataloging over 1800 of the most useful consumer resources" and provides much in the way of one-stop searching for consumer information.

 CollegeNET. Excellent site. Provides information on colleges, scholarships, list of schools with special features, and more.    College Choice Website. A non-profit information service which describes the process and points to different resources useful in finding a college. Geared to high school students.
 College Board Online. Here you can register for the SAT online; get the schedule and calendar of test administration; apply for colleges online; and much more. There are sections for parents, students, teachers, counselors. Site available in English or Spanish.    Princeton Reviews's personalized "college search, selection and application tool." Check out their "Best 331 Colleges."
 Education Week on the Web. National full text newspaper focusing on K - 12 education. Archives, teacher magazine, special reports.  
 Peterson's. Online version of Peterson's many and well-respected publications. Includes the ability to search for colleges at both the graduate and undergraduate levels and also includes job-hunting information, distance learning courses, private schools, and study abroad programs.    AskERIC. Sponsored by the US Department of Education, Syracuse University, and Sun Microsystems, AskERIC is "a personalized Internet-based service providing education information to teachers, librarians, counselors, administrators, parents, and others throughout the United States and the world."

Playbill Online: THE theatre source on the web for Broadway theatre.   Internet Movie Database. A great place to look up information on movies & the people involved in making them, plus special features, movie of the day, news headlines, celebrity birthdays, trivia, and more.
CNN Showbiz and ABC News' Mr Showbiz both provide entertainment news and more.   Premiere Online: the interactive movie magazine.
E! online. "Colorful, daily dose of Hollywood delivered in a fun, hip, irreverent tone." Provides original entertainment news, celebrity gossip, games, reviews, and much more. Intended for movie, tv, and music enthusiasts.

Government: Federal

There are many agencies in the federal government; all have their own individual web pages. A few of the more popular are highlighted here, as are well-developed guides to accessing government information.

 FedWorld Information Network: integrated network offering the public broad access to federal information.    US Federal Government Agencies Directory: Developed by Louisiana State University, this site divides the agencies into their respective branches of government and provides links to each agency's web page. Also includes links to "quasi-government" agencies. A great site to bookmark.
 THOMAS: Legislative Information on the Internet. Sponsored by Congress. The premier site for locating legislative and congressional information. Provides access to the Congressional Record for recent years, bill & law summaries & status, floor activities, historical documents, public laws, other congressional websites, and a host of other resources.    U. S. Census Bureau: Provides access to primarly statistical census information as well as information about the 2000 census.Does NOT include individual census records which many people are seeking for genealogical research.
 U. S. Business Advisor. Information on government contracts, "How-to" section, and more. Its stated goal is to "provide business with one-stop access to federal government information, services, and transactions."    Federal Election Commission. Information about the FEC, the federal election financing rules agency.
     
GPO Access: NYS Library Gateway. Congressional bills, federal regulations, current & pending.     Internal Revenue Service. The agency everyone loves to hate and the site that everyone hates to love -- but they do love it anyway! Gives you IRS forms & instructions, electronic filing, help with your tax questions. All done with a sense of humor.

 Finding Health Information on the Internet: a guide created by the Spokane Public Library which helps to"find and evaluate health and medical information."  The History Channel. Online version of the famous tv channel, with great features -- Today in History, timelines, decades information, speeches, and exhibits.    Smithsonian Museum. While not strictly history oriented -- the online version mirrors the physical museum in scope -- the history information here is incredible, including the online exhibits and digitization of original documents.
American Memory: Historical Collections from the Library of Congress. Primary source material relating to American culture & history. Photographs, books, pamphlets, documents available here.

 Project Vote Smart: New York Legislature. Links to State Legislature , State Senate, and State Assembly home pages. Also includes ZIP-code search which identifies your district if you don't know it.    Legal Information Institute at Cornell Law School. Its aims are "to connect the full resources of the school with the legal profession, with other law schools, with the world; to carry out applied research on the use of digital information technology in the distribution of legal information, the delivery of legal education, and the practice of law ; and to carry out these activities in partnership with but not under the control or direction of such other key actors as law firms, bar associations, public law making and applying bodies, commercial publishers, and other academic institutions."

Literacy Volunteers of America. This organization, which has its central New York/Mohawk Valley branch housed here at Mid-York, serves to teach adults and English as a Second Language students to read. National headquarters is in Syracuse.    Reading Online
International Reading Association    Laubach Literacy. Laubach is the oldest and largest literacy organization in the world. Of special interst is their new reader's press, which features training & reading materials for people of all reading levels.
