Books, publication, and binders of information make up the Frank J. Basloe Library's genealogy collection, which is housed in the Irving M. Basloe Room.  The Evelyn Dexter Arthur Collection consists of more than 600 genealogical research books, more than 100 three-ring binders of locality files, and various publications on the subject. Mrs. Arthur made her initial donation in December of 1988, and for many years she and her husband, William, were available in person to help individuals doing research.  Before Mrs. Arthur's generous gift, the library had only about 40 books in the genealogical subject area.
Included in the collection are many New England Historical and Genealogical Registers, Palatine Immigrants, American Genealogists, National Genealogical Society Quarterlies, and the hand-indexed obituary and clipping books, and much more.
The room itself was made possible by a bequest from Irving M. Basloe.  Mr. Basloe died in 1988; it was dedicated in May of 1990.  (Genealogy buffs might want to note that Irving was one of four children of Frank J. Basloe, who made a collective contribution of $40,000 when the library renovated and moved to its present site in 1974.) More shelving was added to the genealogy room with a bequest from Martin Keller in 2006.
A computerized obituary index, a selection of historical maps, census records, city directories, and Evening Telegrams on microfilm from 1945-present are also part of the collection. Several genealogical databases, America's Genealogy Bank, America's Historical Newspapers, Ancestry.com and HeritageQuest, are available at Basloe Library on all the public access computers. MidYork Library System members with a yellow MidYork Library System card may access America's Genealogy Bank and America's Historical Newspapers from their Internet computer at http://www.midyork.org/WebCat/index.html

The genealogy collection is available for researchers any time the library is open.  Assistance is available Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-5pm.  You may also email a free request for genealogical information to LPaul@midyork.org
