| For Three to
Five Year Olds |
| Threes and fours have mastered the basics of language and are ready for more complicated stories and pictures. When choosing books, look for those that meet a child's individual interests, use fresh language, feature attractive art, and provide messages both overt and hidden that you are comfortable with. Be ready to read them often. Preschoolers like repetition too. Think about purchasing a book that has been borrowed repeatedly from the library. It's sure to be a hit. In addition to picture books, poetry anthologies or a collection of the classic nursery tales such as "The Three Billy Goats Gruff" and "Henny Penny" are good choices. Here is information from the U. S. Department of Education on Helping Your Child Become A Reader and Pictures Books Every Child Should Know as selected by the staff of New York Public Library. |
