| Choose books for gifts with the emphasis on enjoyment. Choosing clothes for children becomes harder as they grow and so does choosing books. If you don’t know the child well, try a selection of paperbacks. Shorter and funnier may be better for a child who is not yet an enthusiastic reader. A gift certificate and/or a post-holiday trip to a bookstore are also good solutions. For the truly reluctant reader include a book as a part of another gift--a new digital camera and a book on photography makes a great combination. Or provide a book that matches a child's passionate interests. Your local librarian can help locate good titles on any subject. Books from your childhood can be tricky. Memory isn’t always accurate. Maybe you were older than you remember when you read and enjoyed it. Such books are good candidates for reading aloud. Then you can share your remembered enjoyment and help with the hard parts. |
